The merits of fasting...
PLEASE know that that this is not a 'preaching' post.
This is a discovery post.
And...since I am in my 6th decade on this Earth, I see and experience life differently these days. I also see changes in the body, in the mind, and in my outlook on life itself.
Small changes, some nice, some uninvited, but nonetheless, happy to be here sharing life with the man I love and everything that comes along with him.
Monday, I began a fast. I used to fast 3-4 days a month when I was in my twenties and thirties...then, not so much anymore. Not certain why I stopped fasting...I did began again while caring for my dear Mother, in 2014- 2016, but that was not a proper space or time to fast and I was, quite frankly, an idiot to do so.
You do need to be in a quiet, stress-free place, in my humble opinion. You need to cease being an amateur athlete - you can place your running shoes to the side, for a bit! You also need to sleep more - cat naps, earlier to bed, sleep in a bit if you wish.
And, you have to REALLY LIKE WATER. You have to be mindful about getting enough H2O into your wonderful vessel. It is imperative. Everyone - every BEING is suffering with the heat in Australia, at present, so - water is even especially more important.
My precious and most wonderful daughter and I argue about the merits of fasting. I CERTAINLY 'GET IT'. She runs a very busy household, like most of us, raises a teenage daughter, virtually alone, has to see that meals are prepared and ready for her child and thinks of fasting as dangerous and unhealthy. Well, at least the last time we spoke of this matter, those were her opinions.
Fasting has been a way of life since the beginning of time.
When you stop and really think about it ~ everything needs to be recalibrated!
We turn phones and computers off in order to have them work more efficiently and faster, don't we?
We switch appliances 'on and off' when they are not working properly.
Why not help the digestive system and other organs involved by...GIVING THEM A MUCH NEEDED BREAK?
That is what fasting does. It is almost as if I can 'feel' my inner body thanking me. My digestive system is relaxing and breathing and regaining strength to do its job properly again, when necessary.
Monday was a bit tough, but I think it was due to the HABITUAL act of eating. Tuesday was a breeze and I did not think about food. This morning, Wednesday, food is THE last thing on my mind and I feel dramatically different - fabulous, actually.
I begin the day with a glass of tepid water. I move on to coffee - a lifetime of totally, black, dark, rich coffee, then...I drink V8 vegetable juice, a half glass with a half glass of water added to it and a big, fat, fresh chunk of lemon. HEAVEN. I go back to drinking more H2O in the afternoon and I do have a cup of black, vanilla tea in the afternoons.
Now, dinner gets a bit tricky. WHO wants to prepare a lovely meal with the sumptuous aromas that go along with it...while FASTING? Well, I certainly don't. That would be pushing it 'a bit' and might feel like TORTURE! I love to cook and I DO love good food, so...when I am at a point in my fast where I can cook dinner, TOO, while fasting - (Ha!) - I will keep you posted! In the meantime, Tinto is his own master chef.
We make resolutions for the New Year. I remember in these past few years, while working as Public Relations manager in the fast paced world of hospitality at THE BEST restaurant in Memphis, Folk's Folly, I abstained from alcohol for 30, 60, and 90 days simply to make certain that I could. It was a good check. My maternal grandfather was an alcoholic - recovered beautifully from it and he had some GREAT stories about his recovery. I applaud Paw-Paw. My sister, Constance, too, suffered and quit alcohol all together in her forties. Constance was my hero and she taught me much about life and our family's history.
It is okay to abstain. It does not matter what others say or comment to YOU. YOU are the captain of your ship.
HAPPY SAILING ~ AND, above all, HAPPY ROAMING!
