We made it to the 21st century!
'WOW' ~ We actually made it to the 21st century; it's TRUE!
Never shall I forget, upon my arrival to Kapunda, Down Unda', not far from Tanunda, and close to Eudunda, The Maxwell House, I asked Tinto where the 'button' was.
He just looked at me curiously. Then he asked, 'What button?' I responded by telling him it was the button that made the house cool or warm, 'You know, the central heating and air conditioning button.'
Well, that conversation right there tells you a LOT, doesn't it?
And, mates, let me say this: The Maxwell House did NOT look as it looks today. Tinto has turned this house into a home. It was so sad, so in need of loving care (which he has provided and I have, too), but, it was still very old and beautiful - to me. Some people simply do not care for 'old' and I understand. Truly. We have different tastes and that is the way it should be or it would be a very boring planet, would it not?
To say the least, there was no 'button'. There was no heating or air conditioning. This old, lovely home was built circa 1860. We DID have a fireplace and received the MOST extraordinary pot-bellied stove, made from giant brake wheels for a wedding present, and that gorgeous monster has provided this entire house with the heat it has needed for 18 years - YOU BEAUTY! Thank you, Paul.
Tinto's children would also laugh hysterically when asking me if I had heard his answering machine recording - giggles in abundance. It was played for me and Tinto, in a very British accent and monotone voice simply recorded: 'Welcome to the modern world.' In many ways, it was a true statement. Tinto moved to Australia when the only real way of international communication was, of course, the phone, then...the invention of the trusty fax machine! And an extremely important point to make here is this: Tinto can and has LIVED OFF THE LAND. He was off the grid before being 'off the grid' was in fashion. This man 'eats, breathes, and sleeps' this kind of living. He is the only person I want to be with and trust when venturing to the outback. This guy has an innate ability to know how to live under the MOST extreme conditions and he has a built in compass. I, sadly, was born without one of those, but as I age...I am developing one! Ha! See? Older age rules - with years, come wisdom.
So, we welcome the NEW BUTTON. Tinto grunted and stomped his feet and scratched his head, but in the end...he did confess that 'due to our current vintage' the BUTTON IS...A VERY GOOD IDEA.
HELLO 21st CENTURY ~ we are embracing you. We will never stop using the pot-bellied stove. It is so very comforting and the fireplace in the sitting room is simply magic. Fires are soothing, mesmerising, and enchanting.
Back to uni studies. I miss writing. I AM writing, but about the theories of the great sociologists - far cry from blogging! Sociology has opened up an exciting new world for me and I cannot wait for each new week in the course work. That is unheard of!
