Pure FUN and...a bit of madness...travelling with TINTO!
With university finished (for now), Tinto had been making plans for us to head off to the Northern Territory, travelling through Alice Springs, literally the centre of Australia, for quite some time now.
I made no bookings; Tinto took care of it all or rather, made one or two bookings for the beginning of the trip, then...everything else was left to chance. And, I realized I prefer it that way! We genuinely did not know where we would 'land' next. Tinto had an idea, but the beautiful catch was NOTHING was written in stone.
So, travel we did. We 'ooooooogghhhhed and aaaaagggghhhhed' at the wide, open spaces and I felt just like one of the Dixie Chicks. I have never wanted to see 'wide, open' spaces as much after this last stent with university. This last study period was climbing a mountain of facts and new knowledge and I did just that and thanked my brain appropriately!
The first night at William Creek Hotel, the staff had huge smiles for us and apologised profusely for not being able to locate the booking. That happens sometimes with online bookings - but...it happens MORE when Tinto makes them. And, supposedly this was the only 'other' booking he had made! "No Worries" - we were absorbed into the warmth of beautiful hospitality and the couple behind the bar made 'stuff' happen. We met THE BEST bartenders on the planet and chatted with a few tourists and a couple of people who were 'stuck' in William Creek due to Covid. We met a LOT of 'stuck' people along this adventure. MOST, if not all, were more than happy to be STUCK in Australia. I met a Mr. Texas, a Ms. New York, a Ms. Nawlins (New Orleans), a Ms. Canada, and a very grumpy Ms. England. Ms. England, it appeared, did not comprehend how much better it was to be stuck here rather than her preferred homeland - which is still in about as much as a mess as America. Not sure - don't quote me - it has been DAYS (about 13) since I have watched the news. These workers were in various hospitality spots sprinkled throughout the Northern Territory and South Australia.
We are back in Kapunda now; most nights I did not have any internet and or signal and could do no typing. Most nights I simply wanted to gaze into the big, brilliant Australian sky and discuss life with my most fav person, Tinto. We did that - a lot.
After a fresh, hot, and very tasty pub meal in William Creek, we darted over to our teeny-tiny, yet comfortable and cosy room for a good night's sleep before heading out in the morning. You could smell a bit of rain. Trevor, our host, advised us that we might be stuck with him for 2 days because...well...the outback roads decide WHO shall travel them once the rains hit.
I plumped up two large fresh pillows against the wall and began some fun reading and later when Tinto decided to follow suit, once he PLOPPED ONTO THE BED...I felt the room move and did not know WHAT the Hell was happening! The moment he tried to lean up against the wall...the bed went flying towards the other end of the room and Tinto was left with his head against the wall and his shoulders with nothing but AIR beneath them. We COULD NOT STOP LAUGHING!!! The look on Tinto's face was priceless and this all happened very suddenly.
A quick fix: push one of the nightstands against the foot of the bed and squeeze one small suitcase between wall and nightstand - and - 'Presto' - the bed became secure.
The next morning we slept in a bit late - looked up at the ominous
sky - looked at each other and said, 'Let's chance it' - boogied our way through the raindrops as they grew heavier and fatter, but...a little under 2 hours later - met the bitumen road to COOBER PEDY! Yay~! We did not get stuck, but if you ever do...no better place than with the people of William Creek Hotel.
Haaaaa~! The ceiling of the William Creek Hotel is covered from wall to wall with business cards. Go. Roam to William Creek - you'll have some fun.
Ta!
