Ruinas Romans - Mirobriga...Portugal.

Spectacular, more than pleasurable day on the way to Lisboa - Oh, MY...highly recommended - in shock it IS sooooo good - Roman ruins in Santiago do Cacem, Portugal.  WHY,  YOU ask?

This village was occupied by an Iron Age settlement since 9th century B.C.  But...the AMAZING fact is that you can touch, wander, see, feel...the essence of the people.  The caretakers actually ALLOW YOU IN.  NO other ruin we visited ALLOWS you into the actual space/village.  How exciting!  The Roman baths are so finely preserved that it boggles the mind. You can clearly see exactly how the heating system was designed for the baths. History is magical (to Tinto AND to me...); to think that you see sitting in the lounge/bath area where Roman citizens set centuries before us...is quite stirring.  Tinto and I explored and touched the ancient stone without uttering words.  I sat calmly in the baths and closed my eyes...trying to imagine the atmosphere.  I swear - I feel like the luckiest woman on the planet.  This site IS worthwhile examining...THANK you to the archeological experts who unearthed it, but...more than that - OBLIGADA for sharing your discovery with the world.  Terrific!  HANDS-ON experience.  Tinto and I spent far too long at these ruins...causing an extremely late arrival in Lisboa.  But, then...WHOSE schedule are we following?  Ha!  Always take extra time to enjoy the sites your mind and heart appreciate.  That is another new mantra for us.

 Individual homes; several families occupied.
Look closely and you will see faint mural.
Huge stones came from surrounding hills and provided perfect roads for the village.
Excitement as we pass homes, walk on ancient Roman road UPHILL and see Baths for first time below us.
Tried my best to capture the detail.
Tinto remarked superb workmanship; entire area 'Bloody Amazing!'
We were inside of this - in awe.
I am under the impression life was pretty nice for the villagers.
Road leads to Forum/Pavillion - they must have enjoyed this spot.
Intricate irrigation system, too.  See that dark figure?  Tinto walking across bridge!
Much larger home with long walls of murals.  He/she must have been hugely important...presuming!?!
Admiring the colours in the stone walls; YES...want these in Kapunda, too.
Top of the Forum...
Excellent, sweeping sight from the Forum...
2014 Samsung camera could not properly capture layers of hills...Village and Baths below.

Tinto & Blanco reporting with a LOVE
of Portugal.

Stay safe on the roads wherever you may ROAM.
